The recap

Every summer, Elio's parents open their villa on the Italian Riviera to a young scholar who helps his professor father in exchange for room, board and long, idle afternoons. This year the guest is Oliver, a self-assured American academic whose breezy manner strikes seventeen-year-old Elio as both careless and irresistible. Over six sun-struck weeks of swimming, bike rides, piano transcriptions and dinner-table debates, Elio's fascination swells into a longing so consuming he can barely think straight, and he cannot tell whether Oliver feels anything in return. Narrated by an older Elio looking back, Aciman's debut novel lingers on the agonizing minutiae of desire: a glance held a second too long, a touch that may or may not have been accidental, the dread of a summer running out. Sensual, cerebral and achingly candid, it captures how a few weeks can quietly reshape a life.

Why read it

For readers drawn to slow, sun-drenched intensity and deeply interior storytelling, and anyone who has replayed a single summer in their head for years afterward.

Fun facts

  1. 01

Aciman has said the book began with a house rather than a romance: Monet's paintings of a villa on the Italian coast became a private fantasy, and he wrote characters in to inhabit it.

  2. 02

The seaside town is a composite, but the Hammer Museum links the setting to Bordighera, which Monet painted in 1884; the 2017 film moved the story inland to Lombardy.

  3. 03

The novel won the 2008 Lambda Literary Award for Gay Fiction.

  4. 04

Luca Guadagnino's film adaptation won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for James Ivory, who at 89 was reported to be the oldest Oscar winner ever.

  5. 05

Aciman returned to Elio and Oliver in a 2019 sequel, Find Me.
